Choosing a floor rug has become quite a task in recent years. With the increasing popularity of hardwood and laminate flooring rugs have become essential to add a feeling of warmth and softness underfoot and manufacturers have not been slow to offer us lots to choose from. There are all kinds of shapes, colors, sizes and textures, so how do you begin finding the perfect floor rug? Here are a few guidelines:-
1. What is the Purpose of Your Floor Rug?
Do you want your rug to protect the existing flooring, to offer warmth to bare feet or to be a focal point and source of decoration in a large expanse of bare floor? Each of these purposes will affect your choice. Just bear them in mind when you are looking through a selection of floor rugs and see if each one fits your reasons for buying.
2. Where is Your Floor Rug Going to Be Used?
If it is a kitchen floor rug you are looking for then you need to select a very different item from the area rug destined for your 11 year old daughter’s bedroom. A pink shag rug will fit the bill in one but won’t do at all in the other where a washable braided rug might be in order. Think about the formality of the room and the practicalities of the situation as well as the tastes of those who use the rooms.
3. What is the Existing Color Scheme? You need to consider your existing color scheme Unless you are going to decorate around the colors in your new rug (not actually a bad idea with the beautiful floor area rugs around these days if your room needs a fresh look). If you have carpet then it would be good if one of the rug colors matched. If not then tie up your rug with one of the other predominant colors in the room in some way.
4. What is Your Preferred Style?
You may prefer a carpet floor rug with short pile – like a standard carpet or a contemporary shaggy rug with long pile. You can get a rug in soft fur or one made of seagrass. You can get shag rugs made of leather and rugs made of cotton. Some fit a formal lounge, some a more country look and others a contemporary loft apartment. Try and fit the style of your rug to the style of decor you are trying to achieve. (Please tell me you’re trying to achieve a particular look with your interior and not just buying any old thing because it appealed at the time!)
5. What is Your Budget?
Although you can get plenty of discount floor rugs some types of rugs will always be more expensive than others. Wool is generally more expensive than acrylic. A leather or suede rug is more expensive than a flokati shag rug. Try to get the best floor rug you can with the money you have available. Browse around online and you will get plenty of choice whatever your budget.
6. What Size Do You Need?
Don’t buy a postage stamp sized rug in a large room. It will look ridiculous. You need a large area rug there. Don’t buy until you can afford the size you need. If you have a small room, don’t swamp it with a large rug which is far too big. You need at least a margin of 12 inches if not a bit more around the edges of the room to look like you have a rug and not a poorly fitting wall to wall carpet. If you are trying to fit a rug in a small bathroom or narrow hallway always measure to see what size will comfortably fit in place with a margin around it.
7. What Shape Rug Do you Want?
A round floor rug looks good in the center of a square (or near square) room and a rectangular rug in rectangular shaped room to have the right proportions. (Think runner in a long hall) If you are putting a rug in part of a room (say the room is L-shaped take into account the shape of that part of the room only. So if that part is square in shape you could put a round or square rug in the center of the area.
