It can be quite an undertaking to choose a large rug as it is not something you want to get wrong. Large rugs can be expensive and even if you go for artificial fibers rather than splashing out on a large wool rug, you are talking about a fair amount. Just be sure you will be happy with your choice, here are a few guidelines and a large area rug or five to kick start your search.
When choosing a rug, make sure that the style is right for your room. If your room is traditional, choose a traditional rug. A large oriental rug would look great in most traditional rooms – in fact, ethnic rugs in general are just fine including southwestern rugs. And if you can afford it, a large Persian rug would lift your traditional room out of the ordinary. Similarly, if you have a contemporary room, look for a contemporary rug. In many cases, a plain rug will look just right in a modern room, but if you go plain, focus on the quality of the rug as poor quality will be very obvious when your rug is covering a large expanse of floor. If you like texture, think about buying a large shag rug for a contemporary room. Shag rugs were very fashionable in the seventies and now they are back with a vengeance, often in different materials to give a modern twist such as leather, suede or cotton t-shirt fabric.
As for color, if your rug is almost as large as your room, keep the contrast in colors in any pattern in your rug subtle to avoid the rug being the only thing you notice when you walk into the room. If you have a huge room however you have a bit more leeway to choose a more dramatic pattern. A mid tone is best in most cases to form a neutral backdrop, but if you have dark wood furniture and a dark or mid-tone floor you could also choose a dark shade of rug such as burgundy, black or brown.
In most cases, match the shape of the rug to the shape of the room or the area of the room where you are placing it. The exception is where you might place a large round rug with a beautiful design in the center of the floor to make a focal point.
