Large Rugs : The Best Designs

Large rugs are a great way to add coziness to a room now that hardwood floors and solid tiled floors are becoming more popular. Whereas wall to wall carpeting is expensive to purchase and fit you can buy large area rugs at quite reasonable prices and simply lay them on the floor – no fitting required other than measuring your room and getting the right size and shape. Not only do you get a cheaper option for flooring as a result but you also get a more beautiful floor.

Obviously if you have to buy hardwood flooring and then a large area rug on top things will get a little expensive but the beauty of this way of doing things is that you don’t have to purchase your flooring all at once. Install your wood flooring and then, when you have the room in your budget add a beautiful floor rug. The floor rug is yours to take with you when you relocate. This is definitely worth thinking about if you have a rental apartment or if you are likely to move home within a few years.

You will find that it is easier to clean a rug than a whole carpet. With a carpet dust and dirt seems to gather where the carpet meets the walls and this is quite difficult to remove with a vacuum cleaner unless you are particularly meticulous with the crevice type tools. If you have light wall to wall carpeting, this build up of dirt can definitely spoil the look of your room. There are no worries like this with a rug. You will easily be able to vacuum the whole rug right up to the edges.

Large rugs are very useful to define particular areas in your home especially in dual purpose rooms. If you have a combined living and dining room for example you may use one large rug under your dining table and chairs and another under the coffee table that sits at the center of your lounge area.

When you are buying a large rug take plenty of time to make the right choice. The best designs are out there but you do need to take time to seek them out and you need to get everything else right not just the design.

The size of Your Rug

It’s best to look for a large rug that leaves a space around the edges of the room. If it is too close to any one wall it will look out of proportion to the size of the room. Make sure that you leave at least 12″ all around, preferably a bit more. If you have a loft style living area this may mean looking around for extra large rugs to set it off. Don’t worry they are out there.

The Shape of Your Rug

Large round rugs look fantastic in rooms that are more or less square or in square shaped room areas but if your room is more rectangular than square opt for a rectangular shaped or large oval rug.

The Color of Your Rug

Most large rugs contain a number of different colors. Be sure that the main colors in the rug are reflected in other items in the room otherwise your rug will seem like it dos not belong there.

The Style of Decor

You can buy large Persian rugs that look fantastic in a traditional and formal interior but they won’t look so good in a contemporary home. Large wool rugs with bold geometric design are likely to suit a modern home. If your home is country cottage style you may want to look for a small floral or paisley pattern in subdued colors. If you are right on trend a large black leather shag pile rug may be for you but don’t just fall in love with a rug. Make sure your room will love it too!

Where to Find The Best Large Rugs

The best place to look for a large area rug is on the internet as you will find so much choice and be able to see pictures of full designs. If you are not sure where to start you will find a full selection HERE. Carpet stores do stock both traditional and contemporary large rugs but they are quite difficult to see and envision in your home. My local store has a huge pile of them, one on top of the other. I’m not sure how you are supposed to cope with that when trying to select a rug.
