Small rugs are a great choice for many places in your home. Although a large space needs a large rug and not something so small that it looks out of proportion, a small area rug is still great as an accent in certain places. For example, you might use a small semi-circular rug at the fireside as a hearth rug and this helps draw welcome attention to your fireplace.
No matter how large your bedroom, a small bedside rug is always welcome so that you step out onto a soft warm surface rather than a bare floor, not so necessary if you have carpet in your bedroom, but essential if you have hard flooring particularly natural stone such as travertine tiling. The beauty of small area rugs is that they wll fit in your washing machine whereas some large washable rugs have to be washed by hand because they would wreck your machine.
As most bathrooms are fairly small, you will find that bath rugs are suitably sized too and all you normally need is a small rug to step out onto to soak up the drips. You can get some beautiful brightly colored bath rugs to cheer up any bathroom. If your bathroom is in very neutral colors, think about buying a matching hot pink or purple bath rug and towels for instant color. Actually bath rugs can be used in other rooms as long as they are plain in color and don’t look like they belong in a bathroom. In the kitchen, a small rug is handy for saving your legs if you spend a lot of time standing. Put a small kitchen rug in your food preparation area to soften the effect of hard tiling. Your legs will thank you for it. Make sure your kitchen rug is washable, however, as you are bound to have a few spills.
Also make sure you have a small, dark colored, preferably patterned rug just inside your front door to catch dirt and moisture from shoes as you come in. A soft rug is better in these circumstances than the hard door mat that you might have just outside your door, which will hopefully catch most of the dirt before anyone enters your home. Again, washable is better for your entrance hall, or use a cheap small rug that you do not mind replacing every now and again, if it can’t be easily cleaned.
Styles
If a small rug is going to have any impact at all, it needs to be distinctive, either because it is in a bold color or because it has a striking design or beautiful texture. Although you could have all three, that is probably too much going on in a small rug. A small red rug will look striking with or without a pattern or texture! If you prefer a pattern. look out for contemporary rugs with bold patterns in the right colors for your room in a modern home or small oriental rugs if you have a room with traditional furniture. If you would like a textured rug, small shag rugs are readily available and you could think about using a small flokati or sheepskin rug in natural colors, if you don’t want to go bold.
