Purple Area Rugs : Pick of the Bunch

For the latest selection of purple area rugs we picked out for you see below. Just look at the variety available. But if you’re not yet sure whether to buy a purple area or not, then here’s an idea of what they can do for you.

Purple is the color of royalty and it gives off a look of luxury and opulence – a great color to have in your home. However, bright purple is quite a bold, in your face color. This means for best results you should either use it in accessories or as an accent rather than as the main color or tone it down by using a less bright shade such as mauve, plum or lilac.

The best color purple might be determined by the furniture you have and the room where you will use it. Dark wood furniture looks better if balanced with the lighter forms of the color whereas pale wood or white furniture goes well with deeper tones of purple such as eggplant, aubergine or plum. However, in a bedroom you would be better with mauve or lilac area rugs rather than dark or pure purple as it has a softer, more romantic feel to it.

In fact, whatever shade of purple area rug you choose you will find that you can make it fit well into your room by including similar colored accessories elsewhere. If you choose an aubergine or eggplant rug, a few cushions and a border edging your curtains in the same color will help tie things together.

Patterned or Solid Purple Rugs?

As purple is very much in vogue at the moment you will find plenty of choice in both plain or patterned rugs. If you have a lot of pattern going on in your room, go for a solid color, however if your room is a little on the plain side, a beautifully patterned purple area rug may be just the thing to breathe life into your room. Just make sure you match the type of pattern to the style of your room – either traditional or contemporary. You will see a few examples of some great purple patterned rugs below.

Should You Choose a Shag Rug?

If you choose a solid rug, then texture is a bonus to avoid your rug looking too plain. There are plenty of purple shag rugs around these days and they look great. Shag pile AND a pattern together probably has too many things going on in the same rug however.

Materials?

The best purple area rugs are in 100% wool but let’s face it, these rugs are not going to be cheap. If a purple wool area rug is out of your budget, console yourself that polypropylene rugs look great these days and feel good too, so your room can look just as good without a wool rug.

Purple Rugs in Every Shade, Shape and Size

There are many shades of purple and you will find purple rugs in all of them. The main thing is to work out what color purple will go best in your room before you begin your search.

A plain purple rug makes quite a statement whether it is a light purple lilac or a dark purple aubergine but one makes a very different statement from the other. The darker the color, the better it is used as an accent color in small amounts rather than becoming the main event – dark purple walls, purple carpet and purple curtains would be too much for anyone whether or not you add other shades but the same is not true of lighter shades (although a bit of variation would not go amiss there either). Purple area rugs are a great way of introducing those accent colors whether in a plain or patterned rug.

Contemporary Purple Rugs

In a contemporary living space you have a few options to introduce purple in a rug. The best solution is to install hardwood flooring or pale natural stone such as travertine tile and then to top that with a large rug. To stay contemporary the rug needs to be in a plain color with a lot of texture – look to purple shag rugs for this – or it needs to have a large geometric pattern including your chosen purple color along with one or two others. Although shag pile might seem a little retro to you (especially if you were around in its heyday in the seventies) it is now pretty much in vogue especially in materials such as pure new wool or leather (rather than synthetic faux fur!)

If you’re wondering about the existence of a leather rug. Yes, you can buy purple leather shag rugs made of tiny strips of leather or suede which would certainly make quite a statement on your floor. They are not cheap but they are very effective at giving your room a luxurious look in one fell swoop.

As for shape, if you have a large floor area which is more or less square then look at the selection of round purple rugs available. For some reason a round rug always seems to provide more of a focal point than a rectangular one.

Traditional and Romantic Rooms

If you have a traditional room then look at the softer shades of purple. Bright purple and aubergine are quite modern “in your face” shades. Although they have been around for centuries they were not generally used in furnishings being seen as royal shades (and at times as a mourning color). If you have a romantic bedroom to decorate then a light purple rug would look fantastic however. Look at the shaggy raggy rugs made of soft t-shirt fabric strips as these make great bedside rugs or look for a traditional patterned rug which teams subtle shades such as beige or mint green with lilac.

Purple Bath Rugs

With our tendency to choose white bathrooms these days and neutral flooring you need something to inject color into your room and in this case a bright color is in order. Purple bathroom rugs look great in a white bathroom especially teamed with matching towels in purple and another color (perhaps gray, black or even lime green depending on your preference.) You can choose a purple bath rug in a plain color or you will also find some modern floral or striped designs which can work well in some rooms.

A Purple Rug for Every Room

A purple rug can enhance any number of room schemes. There are so many different styles which feature this most royal and rich of colors.

A pure wool purple rug either plain or in a large geometric pattern incorporating various shades adds a splash of sophistication to a berry color theme. That would be wonderful in a formal and modern living room along with one wall in rich purple wallpaper mirroring a color in your rug.

A purple shag rug would look fantastic in a teenager’s retro 70s bedroom – this could either be pure wool shag pile or a dyed purple flokati rug – all colors of the rainbow not just natural shades are are now available.

And there are quite a range of colors in the purple theme – from deepest plum through bright purple to smoky lilac with a hint of gray. You will find rugs in all these colors.

The darker the color of purple rugs the more they can form the backbone of a contemporary room scheme. Think dark purple rug runner in a hall covering rich mahogany hardwood flooring (even quality laminate), a chandelier light and mirrored hall table. Consider a fairy princess bedroom for your young daughter resplendent with a pink and lilac rug. In the bathroom pure white bath tub, toilet, sink and tiles can be brought to life with a purple bath rug and towels along with chrome fittings.

The types of rooms that I am not so sure about using purple are in traditional and country settings (unless we are talking about including lilac or a small amount of purple in a floral or other small scale pattern). Rugs for these type of rooms normally have a more subdued tone which purple is not renowned for.

If you have the ideal room but are having trouble locating just the right purple area rug in your local area for it then don’t worry because there are plenty of rugs of all colors to be found online.
