The Best Shag Area Rugs

There are plenty of shag area rugs around these days, but how do you make sure you get the best you can for your budget? It’s generally a case of shopping around, and this is particularly easy, if you buy shag rugs online, where you will find plenty of choice, enabling you to make comparisons between one rug and another in terms of quality, design and price.

Of course, you could just look for the lowest price, but you will often get what you pay for with cheap shag area rugs, as they often have a very synthetic harsh feel to them, whereas the better quality (and slightly more expensive) rugs feel soft to the touch and have a wonderful springiness underfoot. If your budget is low, look for sales and ends of ranges, rather than lowering your standards on quality. You will regret it if you go too cheap, as far as that is concerned, but discount shag area rugs are your friend.

The materials (as well as the quality of construction) make a difference to the price but sometimes it is worth splashing out on a something special. Large shag area rugs made of leather are expensive but such a rug would become a glorious focal point on your floor and raise the look of the whole room, no matter how “budget buy” the rest of your furniture is.

If these leather rugs are beyond your means, however, you could still go natural with a quality flokati or sheepskin rug which you can generally find at a lower cost. For a bedroom, where leather is often not the look you want, in any case, look at the latest shaggy rugs made from cotton t-shirt fabric, which have just right soft look and feel for the room.

You’ll find a selection of shag area rugs below, but there are so many to choose from online, that no doubt we have managed to miss your favorite. Take a look HERE for thousands more to give you a idea of the kind of beautiful shag rug that could soon be gracing your floor. Shag Rug : A Whole Range to Choose From

A shag rug gives you a wonderful sensation beneath your bare feet. It’s all about texture in look and feel. Popular since the pop art period of the 1960s and 70s, they have made quite a comeback today in contemporary interiors as well as those with a retro feel. There are shaggy rugs to suit everyone. Here are the different types you’ll find

Cotton Shag Rugs

Cotton shag rugs are made from short strands of thin cotton. The strips are knotted onto backing material. They are great as area rugs as they are often washable and are available in a whole host of colors to suit every interior. Cotton jersey “shaggy” rugs are particularly soft and feel wonderful to the touch. They make you want to curl up on them like a cat and go to sleep. Fabric shag rugs are also available in acrylic, polypropylene and nylon and these non-natural materials are great if you are looking for cheap shag rugs rather than something exclusive. These rugs are just as hard wearing as other rugs so you will not be disappointed. Fabric rugs differ in texture depending on the length of the strand or pile. A longer length gives you a very shaggy ruffled appearance while a shorter pile gives a more formal look.

Flokati Shag Rug

The flokati rug has been around since ancient times – it used to be worn in Ancient Greece as a kind of traveling garment! You’ll find flokati rugs these days only on floors however. They are generally in a natural cream colors (using the main color of the goat hair) but you’ll also find dyed versions giving pink and purple area rugs. Cream colors go well with natural fall shades and those which are on the whiter side of cream will also look good in a monochromatic black and white room scheme. A pink shag rug would be great for a little girls bedroom whereas purple rugs shout either 70s retro or bang up to date contemporary depending on the other features of the room. There are both natural Greek flokati wool shag rugs as well as synthetic versions around made of a blend of viscose and wool. There tends to be more choice in the synthetic variety and they are the rugs on offer when you see cheap flokati rugs advertised although neither kind is so very expensive.

Sheepskin Shag Rug

Similar to Flokati rugs in terms of being available in natural colors or dyed to all shades of the rainbow – bright blue, red, green or purple a sheepskin shag area rug has a very soft texture beneath you feet. These rugs are generally in the natural shape of the sheep skin whereas flokati rugs tend to be in straight geometric shapes – a rectangular or round shag rug would be the most popular shapes in flokati rugs.
